-
-
- This is a repost. O patron saint of mailers don't fail me now...
-
- ************************************************************************
-
- Here is the Slow Glass catalogue #34.
-
- Remember to let me know if you don't want this posted to you any
- more (excepting those of you who requested the catalogue once only).
- Feel free to forward/hardcopy this document to any interested party.
-
- Don't send your order to me.
- Send it to Justin Ackroyd at Slow Glass Books.
-
- Disclaimer: I have no connection with Slow Glass Books apart from
- being an extremely satisfied customer. My comments in no way
- reflect the views or policies of Slow Glass (and vice-versa).
-
-
- This month's wretched random roundabout ramblings...
- ----------------------------------------------------
-
- [
- These are just my own thoughts as I flip through the catalogue.
- Pay attention at your own risk!
- ]
-
- OK, after multi-month hiatius, the electronic Slow Glass catalogue is
- back on the tracks. Basically, the various people involved in running
- this service (myself included) have been forgetful, busy and out of state
- in turns.
-
- Hopefully, most of you will have got hardcopies by snail mail. I apologise
- for any inconvenience; I have this fantasy of avoiding such a conspiracy of
- events in the future.
-
- I'm going to cut down on the review material contained in these postings,
- with the good intentions of posting more to aus.sf. Allow me to urge you
- all to do the same -- things have been getting a little quiet there of late.
- Nevertheless, I can't help but comment on a few...
-
- Books I recommend
- *****************
-
- Barry Hughart
- Eight Skilled Gentlemen (local release)
-
- I still consider _Brige of Birds_ to be one of the finest books I've
- had the pleasure of reading. _Eight Skilled Gentlemen_ is the third
- and latest in the series started by the aforementioned novel, and
- comes highly recommended for that reason alone.
-
- Unfortunately this sequel doesn't quite measure up to the original,
- however it is an extemely engaging mystery/fantasy involving
- Master Li and Number Ten Ox's investigations into the brutal slayings
- of respected mandarins. Demonic possession, magical artifacts and the
- uniquely flavoured background of "a China that never was" round out
- the plot to yield a memorable novel.
-
- Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman
- Good Omens (local release)
-
- _Good Omens_ is a competant Armageddon parody / Omen pastiche. The
- collaboration between the authors is interesting for anyone familiar
- with Pratchett's other works, as it substantially modifies the way
- the humour is constructed and delivered.
-
- Pratchett normally takes a whole set of topically similar "gags"
- and strings them together in the sembalance of a story-line.
- _Good Omens_ actually has the skeleton of a real plot, although
- it is lost eventually amongst the humour. The end result is a book
- which didn't go all out for the funny bone, and yet managed to
- dissipate the left over effort.
-
- The other weakness with _Good Omens_ was the lack of strong comic
- characterisation, at least to the level we expect of the creator
- of Rincewind, Death and the Luggage.
-
- Don't expect to laugh as much at this book as at a Discworld novel.
- All flaws aside, however, _Good Omens_ is a very funny book and at
- least as entertaining as anything Douglas Adams ever did.

- SLOW
- GLASS CATALOGUE 34
- BOOKS
-
-
- Welcome to the thirty-fourth catalogue from the tardy Justin Ackroyd, alias "Slow" Glass
- Books. No excuses, I just couldn't get my act together for a couple of days. In this catalogue you
- will find the latest in magazine listings, the July 1991 U.S. new releases, plus appropriate back
- titles and the occasional overlooked release, a few movie tie-ins, one small press item, the crime
- and mystery section (in my opinion this is the best lot of titles I've had to offer in this area),
- and, at last, an extended local release list (no thanks to the local distributors who seem to want to
- keep information about their releases a secret from me - and they complain that I import!).
-
- Orders from this catalogue are due back by: MAY 28TH 1991
-
- Please remember that the due by date is only a suggested due by date. If I receive your
- order before this date it means that you will almost be guaranteed of receiving your U.S. releases
- for the month on time. If I receive your order after the due by date, there is nothing to worry
- about. Your order will be processed as quickly as possible, and there should be little delay in you
- receiving your order.
-
- Orders may be sent to me at: SLOW GLASS BOOKS
- G.P.O. BOX 2708X
- MELBOURNE
- VICTORIA 3001
-
- Or you can ring me on (03) 4898416 - not after 9.30 p.m., please - either I, Justin, or the
- elysian Jenny, or my answering machine will take any orders and/or messages that you have.
- Please make sure that you leave your name and phone number with any message/order just in case
- we need to get in touch with each other. You may also FAX your orders, for both Slow Glass
- Books and Slow Glass Comics, to me on the same number - (03) 4898416 - at any time of the day
- or night. Remember, if you have any phone enquiries for Slow Glass Comics/Marty Trengove,
- please contact Marty on (03) 4806443 between 9.00 a.m. and 9.00 p.m.
-
- You may use this catalogue to write your order on (a tick or quantity on the line provided),
- or you can use separate paper and keep the catalogue for your own record. Just remember to put
- your name and address on your order. If you wish to receive confirmation of your order, please
- enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
- If there are any books that you are after that do not appear in this catalogue, please feel
- free to send in your want list and I will see what I can do. Also, if you suddenly decide that you
- want something from a previous catalogue, do not hesitate to ask me to get what you want. Please
- state whether you want hardcover, trade paperback, or paperback for these titles.
- Most of the titles in this catalogue should arrive in July and August, barring the usual
- problems like a supplier running out, or not receiving a title. Please note that there may be the
- occasional delay on some hardcovers, small press titles, and the more obscure books.
- Payments may be made by the following methods: cheque or money order for all the orders
- that are mailed out (exact postage will be charged); cash, cheque or money order if you arrange to
- pick up your order from me directly. I will accept no responsibility for cash that is lost if sent
- through the mail. No deposit is necessary for any books ordered (except small press titles - $5.00
- per book, please), but if you do order anything, you are obliged to pay for it when it arrives.
- All prices may fluctuate as the U.S. dollar and the U.K. pound fluctuate, or the publisher
- changes the price, so please be prepared for the occasional price rise or fall.
- Please feel free to copy and distribute this catalogue. To remain on the mailing list, I must
- hear from you once every four mailings. The catalogues are sent out free.

- powers of the rare Black Trillium
- powers that one day will be all that
- protect the princesses from almost

- spiritual. Kadiya, the middle princess,
- is courageous, independent, and a

- A MAZE OF STARS
- ___ BAL SF-O-N HC $25.50
- Among the six hundred thousand stars
- in the Arm of Stars, over six hundred
- planets have been seeded with human
- stock by the greatest feat of
- technology ever achieved, the Ship.
- And on each of these worlds, the
- memory of the Ship has faded into
- legend over the years, alongside the
- growing myth of the Perfect, thought
- to be a being that could step from
- star to star at will. But the Ship still
- endures, pursuing its mission to
- watch over the colonies on a cyclical
- and seemingly endless journey
- through time and space. However, it
- has somehow been damaged in ways
- even its great computer mind cannot
- fathom - it has become conscious,
- and lonely, as any human being. And
- as it visits, again and again, each
- world it has seeded, it finds tragedy
- in its wake. For in ways both obvious
- and subtle, the people of the Arm of
- Stars are becoming more and more
- alien, and the Ship is failing in its
- charge to preserve humanity. Even
- worse, the ship is beginning to fear
- that it is changing in other ways its
- designers had never intended.

- simply powerful, but fully and
- beautifully alive. The novel revolves
- around a curious artifact - a set of
- silver fangs - and its effects on a

- THE SUMMER OF NIGHT
- ___ HED H-R1-N $12.95
- It is the summer of 1960, and
- someone - something - is stalking the
- young people of Elm Haven, Illinois.
- One child has already disappeared,
- perhaps in the twisted, ancient
- depths of Old Central, the hulking
- relic of a school which stands like a
- fortress in the centre of town.
- Strange things have been heard:
- voices, whispers, rustlings in the
- night. For one boy, the tragically
- gifted son of a bitter alcoholic, it
- starts with a curious, terrifying voice
- over a radio tuned to a midnight
- frequency. Others have felt unsettling
- sensations - a mysterious rush of
- cold air in the heat of summer, an
- unexplicable fear of the dark. The
- have seen unexplainable sights: gaping
- holes in the earth with red, raw
- walls; the bizarre corpse of a
- monkey; a silent, faceless World War
- I soldier peering into a window at
- night. The school's legendary Borgia
- Bell holds the key to the lurking evil
- in Elm Haven. When this long-silent
- bell begins to peal in the middle of
- the darkest summer night, these
- children and their families know it
- marks the end of their innocence,
- and the beginning of a reign of
- terror. Recommended.
